It’s Not For Everyone

October 6, 2009

This post is long overdue. So let’s get right to it.

If a Student Living Center™ gives college ministries a greater presence on campus, fosters outreach, encourages community, and can potentially generate income to support the entire organization, shouldn’t all campus ministries have one of these facilities?

NO.

Definitely NOT.

I’m not sure if even most of them should, could, or would.

So how do you determine if your campus ministry is positioned to operate out of this type of multi-purpose residential facility?

The first question to ask is, “Does a Student Living Center™ match the given ministry’s objectives and philosophies for serving their campus?”

Take Greek InterVarsity (Greek IV) for example.

According to their website, “Greek InterVarsity is part of a non-denominational Christian organization (InterVarsity) that seeks to reach and be a spiritual resource specifically to the Fraternities and Sororities across the country with the message of Christ.”

This is a campus ministry made up mostly by college students who are members of fraternities and sororities on their college campus.  Many of whom may already be living in their Greek organization’s chapter house.  This is where they minister, disciple and serve.  A facility for Greek IV doesn’t align with the organization’s strategic plan and vision for campus ministry.

So Greek IV is an obvious example.

There are several other factors to consider whether or not a Student Living Center™ could work for your ministry.

What do you think some of those reasons are? NEWCHAPTER would love to hear your feedback either through leaving a comment here on the blog or by emailing info@ournewchapter.com .

If your campus ministry already has this type of facility; maybe you could also share some of the pros and cons you’ve experienced? We would love to feature your ministry as an example for either pro or con, if you would like that, as we are exploring where the opportunities lie for us, but more importantly for innovative, Christ-centered, people-focused, Breakthrough, 21st-century campus ministry. Can’t wait to hear from you!!!
